A Promise, Carried Forward

The GEMS Story

A Promise, Carried Forward

In 1959, two teachers, K.S. and Mariamma Varkey, left Kerala, India, for the United Arab Emirates, in search of a better life for their young family. Leaving everything they knew behind, carrying only their belief in the power of education, they arrived in a rapidly changing Dubai.

They saw a community in need - Emirati families and a growing expatriate population, all searching for the same thing: quality English-language education for their children. So, they opened up their own home.

No campus, no strategy - just a belief that a good school exists to serve the community around it, and that education should be within reach of every child.

By 1968, that living room had become Our Own English High School. A small beginning that carried a lasting belief: education should be personal, accessible, and rooted in values.

That belief still guides every classroom decision GEMS makes today- in the words of our Chairman and Founder:

“Whatever the question, education is the answer.”

Founder’s Message

I have spent my life building GEMS with a simple belief: that education has the power to change the course of a child's life and, in doing so, shape the future of families, communities, and societies.

When GEMS began more than six decades ago, we could not have imagined the scale it would reach. Today, we are one of the world's largest private K-12 education groups, with schools across countries, curricula and communities, and more than half a million students educated over our history.

But scale was never the destination. What matters is what that scale makes possible.

It means giving families genuine choice - across curricula, learning pathways and educational experiences - so that every child can find an environment to thrive. It means bringing together educational expertise from around the world and sharing what we learn. And it means investing in the people, ideas and opportunities that can make a difference to a child's education.

Over the years, our students have gone on to study at leading universities around the world, including Oxford and Cambridge, Ivy League and Russell Group institutions, and universities across Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. But success cannot be measured only by university destinations or examination results.

A GEMS education is about preparing young people for life beyond school - with the knowledge to succeed, the confidence to find their voice, the character to make good choices and the adaptability to navigate an ever-changing world.

That is why we have always believed education should look beyond the classroom.

Academic achievement matters. So do creativity, wellbeing, character, leadership, curiosity, and the ability to work with others. Every child is more than a set of grades, and every child's journey will be different.

Our educators are at the heart of making that journey possible. Across our schools, teachers and school leaders bring GEMS' educational philosophy to life every day - knowing their students, challenging them to think, supporting them when they need it and opening their eyes to possibilities they may not yet see for themselves.

And as education evolves, so must we.

Technology and artificial intelligence are changing how children learn and how educators teach. We see enormous potential in that change. Our investment in AI and digital learning is designed to strengthen education - giving educators better insight into how students are progressing, enabling more personalised learning and creating more opportunities for teachers to do what they do best: teach, guide and inspire.

Because while technology can transform how we learn, education will always be about human connection.

It is also about responsibility. Every GEMS school is built around the safety, wellbeing and care of every child entrusted to us. That responsibility sits at the heart of everything we do.

More than 66 years after GEMS began, our ambition remains as strong as it was on day one: to make a meaningful difference through education. We are proud of what GEMS has built, but we are even more focused on what comes next.

The world our students will enter will be different from the one we know today. Our role is to make sure they are ready for it: equipped with knowledge, grounded in values, open to possibility and confident enough to shape the future rather than simply respond to it.

That is the GEMS story. And it is a story that continues to be written by every student, educator, parent and community who is part of our global family.

A Belief That Grew Beyond GEMS

The belief that began with one small school has grown beyond GEMS.

Founded by Sunny Varkey in 2010, the Varkey Foundation works to help make quality education possible for every child, by supporting educators, strengthening teaching and championing the people who make learning possible.

From supporting teachers and school leaders to recognising exceptional educators through its global prizes, the Foundation carries forward a simple idea: when we invest in education, we invest in the future.

Today, its work reaches beyond the schools and communities of GEMS, bringing that belief to educators and children around the world.

A Legacy in Motion

In the 1980's, Sunny Varkey carried his parents' promise further - not by replacing it, but by asking how many more children it could reach. Gradually, he built an ecosystem, one shaped by four core values of Care, Excellence, Always Learning, and One Team - that still guides GEMS today.

Families in GEMS Rewards

Sixty-five years in, the promise a young couple made in Dubai still holds: that every child, wherever they start, deserves an education that helps them go as far as their ambition can carry them. We're proud of how far that promise has already travelled. We're more interested in where it takes the next generation.
