Student Leadership
Beyond Academics
Leadership across every phase
At AKIS, student leadership is embedded across every phase, giving students real ownership of school life through elected councils, house roles, and peer leadership programs. These opportunities build confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills that prepare students for life beyond school.
Student voice
Student Council
Student Council members are the voice of their classmates. They listen to students’ ideas, opinions, and concerns, sharing them with school leaders to help make AKIS an even better place. Councils help plan and support school events, assemblies, celebrations, and awareness campaigns that make school life fun, meaningful, and inclusive.
- Middle School
Middle School Council meets weekly with the Dean of Students and Grade Leaders
- High School
High School Council meets monthly with the Student Life Officer and Team Leaders, working closely with the National Honor Society (NHS) on joint initiatives
- Roles
Each council includes elected President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer roles (Boys and Girls) per phase.
Belonging
House Captains & House System
House Captains lead their assigned house with exemplary behaviour and school spirit. They drive participation in house competitions, motivate peers to earn house points, and help organise house assemblies and events.
The House System runs across all phases, evolving in complexity as students progress:
Kindergarten
Introduces house points for kindness, teamwork, and respect, with celebrations built around joy and belonging
Elementary
Points earned for academic excellence, Be a GEM values, and active participation; top house celebrated each term
Middle School
Points tied to positive behaviour recognition on Phoenix, weekly top-student contributions, and the Gemstone of the Month, a peer-nomination programme

National Honor Society (NHS)
AKIS is home to a thriving chapter of the National Honor Society - one of the largest and most respected student organisations in American high schools, recognising scholarship, leadership, character, and service.
Since launching at AKIS in 2020, the NHS membership has grown from 20 to over 130 students, who have led initiatives including the Film Festival, Walkathon, and MUN Conferences.

“The name ‘NHS’ represents academic excellence and a goal everyone should aim to achieve, as membership in the NHS signifies a dedication to upholding ethical standards and making positive contributions to both school and society.”
— Mohamed Abdel-Naby, Former AKIS NHS President
Student-led
Clubs & Societies
All students can start their own student-led club with an idea and a short proposal to the Student Life Officer. New members join at Club Day each September, with most clubs meeting weekly during breaks alongside a teacher advisor.
AKIS currently runs 40+ student-led clubs, including Badminton, Debate, MUN, Forensic Science, Esports, Environmental, Gardening, and Library clubs.
